Alexander Zakharchenko – The Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Chairman of the Council of Ministers, commander-in-chief of joint armed forced of the DPR.
Born in June 26, 1976, in Donetsk. Mother is a Russian, father is a Ukrainian. Married, has four sons.
Having graduated from school №4 in Donetsk in 1991, Zakharchenko continued studying in Donetsk college for industrial automation, specialization – mining electromechanician. Graduated cum laude.
Alexander Zakharchenko’s first job – a mine, where he became an electromechanician of V category. Later he entered the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ law institute.
Having spent 1,5 years as the electromechanician, Zakharchenko engaged in entrepreneurial work connected with coal industry.
In 2010, a branch of the Kharkhov "Oplot" public organization, which was then headed by Zakharchenko, was established in Donetsk. The purpose of "Oplot" is the provision of social, financial, legal and psychological assistance to the families of policemen killed in the performance of their duties. Also, "Oplot" assisted disabled soldiers. Members of the organization were actively struggling with the glorification of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. "Oplot" controlled the maintenance in proper condition of the Great Patriotic War's monuments.
In 2014, Alexander Zakharchenko actively participated in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Donetsk People's Republic.
After the so-called "Euromaidan" in Kiev in the winter 2013-2014 and the subsequent illegal change of power, Alexander Zakharchenko took a tough antimaidan stance and joined the forces of the militia, which began to take shape at the time, protesting against the coup in the country. The main task for Zakharchenko was returning for residents of Donbass possibilities to determine their own future, political system, to decide in which country they would live, what language to speak. After Donbass once again was not heard, he had to take up arms.
In the spring of 2014, on April 16, Alexander Zakharchenko headed a group of armed men who occupied the building of the Donetsk city administration.
After the referendum on the independence of the DPR on May 11, 2014, Zakharchenko first became the military commander of Donetsk, and later Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic.
He was "Oplot" division commander of the DPR army until 7 July, 2014.
Personally participated in the battles on the territory of Donetsk region. On 27-28 of May 2014, during the combat assault of the Donetsk International Airport n.a. Prokofiev, Alexander Zakharchenko was wounded in the leg. A month later, Zakharchenko received the rank of "major".
In August 2014, Prime Minister of the Donetsk People's Republic Alexander Boroday resigned. Deputies of the Council of Ministers appointed Alexander Zakharchenko in his place. This decision was accepted almost unanimously. On the same day Zakharchenko took the oath of allegiance to the republic's people and took up his duties.
In October 2014, Alexander Zakharchenko filed documents to the DPR CEC as a candidate for the post of the Head of the Donetsk People's Republic, becoming the first registered candidate for the post.
The elections were held on November 2. 75% of DPR citizens voted for Zakharchenko. The inauguration of the elected leader of the republic was held on November 4, in Donetsk Academic Musical and Drama Theater.
In January 2015, Alexander Zakharchenko launched the first stage of restoration works in the cities of the Republic. From January to May 2015, the works had been carried out in 293 objects of various localities of the Donetsk People's Republic.
In February 2015, at the first congress of public movement "Donetsk Republic" Alexander Zakharchenko was unanimously elected Chairman of the movement.
On February 12, 2015, Alexander Zakharchenko attended the negotiations in Minsk. Leaders of "Normandy Four" countries participated in the negotiations. As a result of negotiations, the Package of Measures on the implementation of the Minsk agreements was signed, which provides for the "immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions" from February 15, at 00:00 Kyiv time. This paragraph of the Package of Measures is not carried out by Ukraine so far.
On February 17, 2015, Alexander Zakharchenko was wounded in the leg during the battle for Debaltsevo. For successful military operation the DPR MPs awarded Alexander Zakharchenko with the title "Hero of the DPR" and extraordinary military rank of "colonel". Also, after the liberation of Debaltsevo Alexander Zakharchenko was awarded with the Medal of "Glory of the LPR," he was also awarded with the title of "major general" of the Lugansk People's Republic. This decision was made by the LPR MPs.
In August 2015, the DPR Head Alexander Zakharchenko launched the second phase of the restoration of infrastructure and houses. According to the programme of reconstruction, the second stage includes: construction of 111 new single-family houses, reconstruction works in 2,000 private residential buildings, restoration works in 1189 multi-apartment buildings etc.
Thanks to the efforts of Alexander Zakharchenko and the team of Donbass patriot formed by him, it became possible to prevent a humanitarian disaster in the Donetsk People's Republic and the economic collapse caused by the blockade of the DPR by Ukraine.
